Note: The procedures described below will normally require an ultrasonic horn to be re-tuned back to its proper frequency before it can be put back into use.
Some people are not aware of the fact that in many instances an ultrasonic horn can be refurbished and/or modified in order to extend its useful life. If the face detail of an existing ultrasonic horn has worn out, it can often be re-machined back to original condition. Likewise, if your part changes or if you have a new part all together, an existing ultrasonic horn can sometimes be modified in order to avoid the expense of purchasing a completely new horn.
When an ultrasonic horn is refurbished or modified, material is normally removed from the face of the horn. Removing material from an ultrasonic horn changes its frequency. For this reason, you should either have the work performed by someone who specializes in ultrasonic horns or, if you would like to re-face the horn yourself, you should send the horn in to have the frequency checked after you have finished machining the face detail.
